You don't need hundreds of thousands of points to fly to Europe and back for free (or nearly free). Sometimes, all you need is need 40,000. Maybe even less.

We often hear from travelers with just a handful of points and miles wondering if they have enough to book that dream trip or not. Some assume you need points balances close to 100,000 to make a trip work. They've probably been staring down airfares in the $1,000s and have decided that points and miles are their only hope.

I've got news for the more points-poor travelers out there: You probably have enough points to make a Europe trip work.

Delta SkyMiles fare

Here are two slick examples flying to London (LHR) in 2025: One on Delta Air Lines (above) and one on American Airlines (below). In both cases, you don't need more than 38,000 points to book roundtrip flights. Yes, even all the way from Honolulu (HNL)!

And it gets even better than that. In some cases, you can fly Delta roundtrip from just 24,000 miles or fly fancy Emirates to Italy or Greece from just 35,000 points, too.

Don't rule out a Europe trip just because your points and miles balance is low. You might be closer than you think.

Delta SkyMiles from 31K RT

Travelers with Delta SkyMiles might see sometimes see sky high rates just to fly economy to Europe and back, but if you hold out for a SkyMiles flash sale, you could easily get there for less than 40,000 points.

Delta SkyMiles

Delta occasionally slashes rates on flights within the U.S. to Europe and elsewhere. Sometimes these sales are advertised; other times they’re secret – but we find them anyway and send them to our Thrifty Traveler Premium members.

We have a full guide to booking with Delta SkyMiles that you can use to find low fares. And we break down exactly how to do it for our Thrifty Traveler Premium members in every deal we find, too.

SkyMiles info

We sent this flight deal to our members a few days ago and it included hundreds of U.S. cities with roundtrip fares to Europe under 40,000 SkyMiles.

The incredible part about using AAdvantage miles to book roundtrip flights to Europe, is that the lowest fare is Main Cabin, giving you free seat selection, a carry-on bag, a checked bag, and the ability to change or cancel your trip and have your miles redeposited in your account.
