Nothing says premium travel rewards credit card quite like a membership with Walmart … and now, Burger King?
That's right: If you're paying $695 a year (see rates & fees) for *amex platinum* or have the $375-per-year (see rates & fees) *biz gold* in your wallet, you now get a 25% discount at Burger King … and soon, one free Whopper every three months (with any purchase). To be fair, Amex didn't go out and partner with BK directly on this new benefit – it's an extension of the bank's existing partnership with Walmart that gives Platinum and Business Gold cardholders a monthly credit to cover the entire cost of a Walmart+ subscription. That Walmart membership now comes with Burger King perks.
Still, you still have to laugh at the juxtaposition of a fast food perk on a top-dollar travel credit card. Compared to other existing benefits on the Platinum Card like a yearly credit of up to $100 at luxury retailer, Saks Fifth Avenue, and a yearly credit of up to $200 for Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings, this one doesn't exactly fit in.
Just add it to the laundry-list of benefits and revolving statement credits that have many travelers at wits' end with Amex. On the other hand, free is free: For once, this new benefit didn't come with an increased annual fee.
Here's what you need to know if you plan to “have it your way.”
An Overview of Walmart+ Overview
If you're unfamiliar with Walmart+, think of it as the big box store's version of Amazon Prime. If you're unfamiliar with Amazon Prime, I give up.
With Walmart+, you get free next-day and two-day shipping with no order minimum, including items sold by third-party retailers through walmart.com. You'll also get free same-day delivery for groceries and other in-store items with a $35 minimum order.
Plus, you can get a 10 cent per gallon discount on gas at over 13,000 stations nationwide, get a complimentary Paramount+ Essential plan, free auto care services, and more.
At $12.95 per month (or $98 per year), I likely wouldn't pay out-of-pocket for it. But I don't have to: I pay for the fee with my Platinum Card, which triggers a monthly credit to cover the entire cost. After a refresh late last year, the *biz gold* added an identical credit of up to $12.95 per month to cover the cost of Walmart+ as well.
Since I get it for “free” with my Amex Platinum Card, I use Walmart+ from time to time and enjoy the convenience. And now, there's one more place to use it.
How the New BK Perks Work
In a first-of-its-kind partnership, Walmart and Burger King have partnered to offer dining benefits to Walmart+ members.
Effective immediately, Walmart+ members can link their Walmart+ and Burger King Royal Perks accounts to begin saving 25% on all online and BK app orders. If you don't already have a BK Royal Perks account … well, good for you. But you can create one while activating this new benefit in your Walmart+ account.
Once logged into your Walmart+ account, you should see a full list of benefits, including this new partnership with BK advertised at the top. Click “Get started” to link your accounts or create a new one.
From here, you'll be brought to a dedicated Burger King page where you can link accounts. You'll be prompted to sign in to your Royal Perks account or create a new one.
From there, you just need to enter your email address, name, and agree to the account terms, and you're all set. You don't even need to create a password to get started. You can now order online or use the BK app – you'll see your automatic 25% discount listed in the offers tab.
And effective Sept. 16, you get one more benefit: Walmart+ members can get one free Whopper (with any purchase) once every three months. You can use get one free Whopper at any point before the end of 2024, then once a quarter starting Jan. 1.
This is a use-it-or-lose it benefit: If you don't claim your free Whopper each quarter, you can't get two in the next three-month period.
Yes, I do feel ridiculous for writing that.
Bottom Line
Through Amex's partnership with Walmart+, Amex Platinum and Business Gold Cardholders can now get a 25% discount at Burger King when using the fast-food chain's mobile app or ordering online at bk.com. And come mid-September, you can add a free flame-grilled Whopper with any purchase every three months.
The only lingering question is: “Would you like fries with that?”
